What is the HMH Growth Measure ? HMH Growth Measure (GM) is a research-based and adaptive benchmark assessment for Math and ELA. It uses assessment performance to connect to HMH's curriculum and instruction resources including Into Math, Into Reading , Into Literature, Read180, Math180, and Waggle. HMH Growth Measure delivers valid and reliable achievement scores including an HMH Scaled Score, performance categories (overall and by domains covered), Student Growth Index, Grade Level Equivalence, and a Lexile ( Reading ) or Quantile (math) Interval.

2 2. What grades does HMH Growth Measure assess? HMH Math Growth Measure : Grades K-8, Algebra I, Geometry 1, and Algebra II. HMH Reading Growth Measure : Grades 2-11. Grade 12 students take the Grade 11 test. 2 3. HMH Growth Measure is an adaptive test. What is that? The HMH Growth Measure is a computer-adaptive test (CAT). The test adjusts item difficulty to students responses. As a student progresses through the assessment, the difficulty levels of questions and text complexity change according to a student s performance. For example, if a student correctly answers a group of questions, the difficulty of future questions increases; if a student answers a group of questions incorrectly, the difficulty of future questions decreases.

3 The assessment ends once the student has completed up to 35 questions, including skips. 4. How does the HMH Growth Measure connect HMH solutions? HMH Growth Measure provides benchmark assessments up to three times a year. Combining HMH Growth Measure assessment data and in-program assessment data provides a more complete view of a student s academic Growth and performance. The domain performance for classes and students represents the major standards covered by each subject and grade level test. The domains align tightly to common standard sets like Florida s BEST Standards, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), virginia s Standards of Learning (SOL), and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Standards and allow educators to connect back to the instructional materials in each of the HMH programs.

4 The HMH Growth Measure domain information which helps educators refine their grouping and instructional planning from the HMH Growth Measure results at a more detailed level than the overall score and performance levels. 5. When does a district use the HMH Growth Measure ? It is recommended that a district use the HMH Growth Measure at the beginning of the year (Fall), in the middle of the year (Winter), and at the end of the year (Spring). The HMH Growth Measure is assigned by teachers like any other assessment or lesson on Ed and students access the test the same way they access any other assignment. Because the HMH Growth Measure is on Ed there are no additional technical requirements.

5 6. What are the test windows for the HMH Growth Measure , and can they be adjusted? There are three test windows: Fall: July 1 October 31 Winter: November 1 March 1 Spring: March 2 June 30 The test windows are pre-set, enabled by default, and can be adjusted by the district administrators. A teacher can go in and refine the assessment start and end date within the district administrator s defined test window dates. If an administrator would like to adjust the test window, it is 3 recommended that each test window maintain a 4-month span so that sufficient learning can occur between administrations. HMH Growth Measure Data Information 7. What are the table of cut scores for each grade band?

6 The HMH Growth Measure performance bands for both Math and Reading are labeled as: Below-Level (G01-G49), On-Level (G50-G74), and Above-Level (G75-G99); where G represents the grade-level of the student ( , 532 would be a 5th grader categorized as Below-Level). Grade K and Grade 1 are for the HMH Math Growth Measure only. Note: Grade 12 students are administered the Grade 11 test and will receive a score between 1101 and 1199. 7 What are the skills related to each grade band? Each grade-level test covers a specific set of domains (topics). The domains covered will be included in the product guides that will be made available to you and your customers. a. For the HMH Reading Growth Measure , the two domain scores will be for Reading Comprehension and Language. These two domains apply to Grade 2 through High School (K-1 is covered by Amira, see that program s information for more details). 4 b. 8 Are the Math and ELA reporting domains the same as Common Core State Standard (CCSS) domains? Not in all cases. There are 11 domains (strands) within the CCSS. The HMH Growth Measure has six domains which overlap with these 11 strands. All content on the HMH Math Growth Measure assessment is aligned to the CCSS. The HMH Reading Growth Measure has standards aligned to CCSS GM reports only on the top-level domains of Reading Comprehension and Language and not the CCSS ELA subdomains. 10. Does the HMH Growth Measure connect to state assessment readiness? 5 The HMH Growth Measure will be able to forecast state summative performance as necessary data from the states become available and linking studies are performed.

9 11. How can a student receive an On-level Scaled Score and a Below Grade-Level GLE? The HMH Scaled Score indicates a student's readiness to learn on-grade content standards based on the Level Test item pool. The GLE indicates the student's proximity to those end-of-year performance expectations translated from the Quantile/Lexile Frameworks. This means that a student can be ready to learn on-grade level content while still needing supplemental or intervention support due to how far away they are from achieving the EOY goals. Using HMH scaled score in conjunction with HMH GLE allows for assessing a student's performance from multiple dimensions (as the context of interpreting a scaled score depends on the TOY of the administrations), and most appropriately support decision making when considering intervention, supplemental, or enrichment activities.
