Gangs of London season three is officially on the way, with confirmation of its renewal announced almost a year ago.

With that in mind, if you've reached the end of the second season (especially now that the popular violent Sky drama has been added to Netflix), there's plenty more of this wild and bloody criminal-syndicate saga still to come.

We expected the blood, the entrails, even the snipped-off digits and the loss of limbs. However, what we didn't expect was that major Elliot Finch twist... Spoilers ahead!

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù's character is now deep in the underbelly of London's gritty gang life, and he looks comfy there. So what's next for Finch, the Wallaces who have been sidelined and the rest of the gang factions?

We'll need another season to figure that out. Here's everything we know about when Gangs of London will return for season three – including the most recent news of brand new cast members (more details on that later).

When is Gangs of London's season 3 release date?

Despite Sky taking its sweet time to green-light a third season of Gangs of London, in October 2023 it was revealed that production had started (along with a new creative team).

The series began filming a new instalment with filmmaker Kim Hong-sun (Project Wolf Hunting) directing and executive producing, and Peter McKenna (Kin) serving as lead writer and executive producer (via Variety).

The production also shared a behind-the-scenes peek at the first table read for the new third season, which happened in September of last year. So we know new episodes are well on the way.

As for when we can expect them to reach our screens? Well, that's another story.

It took two years for Gangs of London season two to be released following the first season. The large-scale production and cinematic quality undoubtedly played a massive part in the long wait.

So, for now, the release date for season three is TBC, but we'll update you as soon as we have a clearer picture.

Who will be back in Gangs of London season 3's cast?

Joe Cole's character Sean Wallace only just made his comeback – and he won't be going anywhere soon, as it has been confirmed that he will be returning in season three.

His presence naturally invites challenge, even from behind bars, and there's no greater rivalry to end season two than that between Sean and Elliot.

Speaking of Elliot, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù will also reprise his role. Elliot has forged alliances with the Dumanis and assumed a new role on London's streets (more on that below). This alliance will be important, with Lucian Msamati and Pippa Bennett-Warner both returning to their roles as Ed and Shannon Dumani respectively.

Also confirmed to be returning to season three of Gangs of London are:

  • Michelle Fairley as Marian Wallace
  • Brian Vernel as Billy Wallace
  • Narges Rashidi as Lale
  • Asif Raza Mir as Asif Afridi
  • Orli Shuka as Luan Dushaj
  • Eri Shuka as Mirlinda Dushaj
  • Jahz Armando as Saba
  • Fady Elsayed as Faz

Those who didn't make it through the street wars were Arta Dobroshi's Floriana (her last-minute double-crossing of the Wallaces earned her a bullet in the head) and Koba (Waleed Zuaiter), Afridi's enforcer. Koba stepped on too many wrong shoes and met his fate via a poisoned chip shop patty.

Paapa Essiedu's character Alex Dumani didn't even make it past episode one. In a tragic twist, Alex died by suicide when he feared he would never escape the Investors' hold.

In addition to Gangs of London's returning stars, in November 2023 several new season 3 cast members were announced.

Deadline reported that Andrew Koji (Warrior) will assume the role of an unnamed assassin, who will be at the heart of the mystery that will unfold over the next series. Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) will play Cornelius Quinn, a face from the past and an old rival for both Marian and Ed.

Meanwhile, T'Nia Miller (Sex Education) will portray the new Mayor of London, who will cause chaos for the gangs, while former EastEnders star Phil Daniels and Ruth Sheen (Brassic) will play a married couple who are "entrenched in the old-school London gangster values".

Meghan Lyvers, who's Sky Studios' director of original series, said: "Gangs of London remains a highly valued and critically acclaimed Sky original franchise and we are pleased it continues to attract such incredible actor talent in addition to our fantastic established cast."

What will happen in Gangs of London season 3?

Gangs of London's season two finale brought about major changes for both Sean and Elliot after the death of the latter's father resulted in him taking revenge on everyone involved.

This led to the death of Koba and the brutal maiming of Billy Wallace, who was just a pawn in his vengeance against Sean (who ordered the hit on his dad).

While Sean ended up behind bars for Koba's murder, Elliot climbed to the top, becoming London underworld's new king with the Dumanis positioned at his side.

With the investors now crippled by Sean's attack before imprisonment, season three will undoubtedly delve into this brave new world with Elliot as boss. What that new regime will look like with an ex-undercover cop at the helm, nobody knows.

The brief information given about season three reveals that while Elliot is now operating as a top-level criminal with the Dumanis, "their business is thrown into chaos when their shipment of cocaine is spiked, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians all over London."

One thing that will remain the same is that Elliot will not rule unchallenged. Sean may be in the clink, but if he can come back from the dead, there's no way he won't come back from this. He'll also have Billy by his side, and it won't be long until he's free to reclaim his spot on top.

Billy and Sean's strained relationship with their mother, Marian, will create additional pockets of tension in their life. After her double-crossing Sean led to Billy's capture (and the loss of his arm), neither one will be quick to forgive.

The season's end also came with the shocking reveal that Lale was still alive. When we last saw the Kurdish boss, she had killed and fought her way out of Mr Afridi's imprisonment, only to be handed back by her lover, Sean. However, instead of being killed, Afridi spared Lale's life, and the two formed an alliance. Sean had better watch his back – you know what they say about a woman scorned.

Whatever happens in season three, expect the focus on the diversity of the titular setting to continue.

"Gang violence in London and the African diaspora community go seemingly hand in hand," Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù told Vulture. "To see nuanced expressions of Blackness in the show was immediately heartening, and I'm so proud to be part of a show that shows London as it is."

"We've had gangster shows before that are basically whitewashed or entirely focused on white communities, so to be able to expand that and be really London, and therefore international, is not only a key component of the show but one of the reasons I wanted to be part of it."

Is there a Gangs of London season 3 trailer?

Come on now – patience. It will take some time for Elliot to mop up the trail of blood left in his wake.

Until then, keep checking in. We'll keep you in the know as soon as we have more information to give.
